Stagshaw No 1
Stagshaw No 1 Gallery: Locomotives Description: Stagshaw No 1 rounds the bend out of the shed and goods yard of the Tanfield Railway. The railway is said to be the oldest working railway, running since 1725. Originally as a horse drawn wagon way ,then to a rope worked railway with winding engines and then to be operated by steam locomotives till its close in the 1960s. Rebuilt by volunteers and maintained by that work force it has become a fully working railway. The golden stag on the chimney of the locomotive is the emblem of the Stagshaw family who owned and managed collieries in the Durham area for nearly a century.
