Spitfire Irish Air Corps Gallery: Aircraft Description: This Spitfire was built as a single seat fighter at Castle Bromwich factory Vickers Supermarine in 1944. In its war career it was based in Belgium on ground support and srtaffing attacks, after doing the same duties in Holland and the Rhineland it returned to the UK for storage. In 1950 it was selected for conversion to a trainer for the Irish Air Corps, the delivery was completed in 1951 and given a new identity I A C 161. The Tr9 Spitfires were used to train pilots for the I A C Seafire fleet. In 1960 they were retired with the Seafires. After many owners the Tr9 was acquired by the Aircraft Restoration Company and was restored to its I R C colour scheme. It is seen here at the Flying Legends Airshow at Duxford
